1. Overview

This privacy policy applies to the Marked application ("the App") on Android and Windows. The App is designed as a privacy-first, offline-first journaling and milestone-tracking tool.

2. Data Collection and Local Storage

Marked works locally on your device. The developer does not operate servers and does not collect, access, harvest or store your personal data, projects, journal entries or milestones. Everything you create in the App is stored on your own device.

On Windows, your journal is a single file in your Documents folder. If your Documents folder is synced to a cloud service such as OneDrive, that service keeps a copy under its own terms.

3. Peer-to-Peer Synchronization

If you choose to sync your phone with your PC, you pair them once by scanning a QR code shown on the PC. After that, the App connects them directly over your local network. Everything they exchange is encrypted end to end (AES-256) with a key created during pairing, so nobody else on the network can read it, and it is never routed through or stored on any server.

4. Optional Backups & Google Drive

Marked offers optional backups of your journal. They stay off until you turn them on:

• Folder backups: You can pick a folder on your device through Android's folder picker. The App can only access the folder you pick, and saves backup copies there.
• Google Drive backups: If you connect your Google Account, the App uploads backup files directly from your device to a hidden, app-specific folder (appDataFolder, using the drive.appdata scope) in your own Google Drive. The App can only access backup files it created and cannot see any other files in your Google Drive. The developer has no access to your Google Drive or your backup files.
• What a backup contains: your projects, days, milestones and important days. Each backup also records the date it was made, the App version, your device's name (for example "Redmi 15C 5G") and how many projects, days and milestones it holds, so you can tell backups apart. App settings and paired devices are not included.
• Google Account information: When you connect Google Drive, your Google email address is saved on your device, to show which account is connected and to back up to that account. It is never sent to the developer.
• When backups run: Once you connect Google Drive or choose a folder, the App backs up about once a day, when you open or leave it, and only if your journal has changed. You can turn this off ("Back up daily" or "Copy daily") and back up only when you tap "Back up now".
• Encryption: Uploads to Google Drive are encrypted in transit (HTTPS). You can also turn on password protection, which encrypts your backup files on your device with AES-256 before they are saved or uploaded. The key made from your password stays on your device and is not included in Android's own cloud backup.
• Retention & deletion: The App keeps the 7 most recent backups in each place (Google Drive and your folder) and deletes older ones. Uninstalling the App does not delete your backups. You can delete folder backups with any file manager. You can delete Google Drive backups in the App (Backup & restore → Disconnect → "Also delete my backups from Google Drive"), or on the Google Drive website under Settings → Manage apps → Marked → Options → Delete hidden app data.
• Android system Auto Backup: On Android devices, the operating system's built-in Auto Backup may also back up app data to your personal Google Account, according to your device's backup settings.

5. Permissions

• Camera: used only to scan the QR code that pairs your phone with your PC. The image is analyzed on your device and is never stored or sent.
• Notifications: used only for the optional daily reminder, which is scheduled on your device.
• Network: used for syncing with your PC on your local network, for optional Google Drive backups, and for Google Play features (update checks and tips).

6. Third-Party Services & In-App Purchases

The App contains no advertising or tracking SDKs, and the developer runs no analytics. We never share data with advertisers. Some Google components built into the App send Google limited technical data, as described in Google's Privacy Policy:

• ML Kit (scanning the pairing QR code): device model, operating system and app version, performance information and a per-installation identifier, which Google uses to measure and improve ML Kit (diagnostics and usage analytics). The camera image itself is processed on your device and is not sent.
• Google Play: your device type and app version, to check whether an update is available. Optional tips are processed entirely by Google Play Billing; the App only records on your device that you have tipped, to stop showing the support reminder.
• Google Sign-In: used only when you connect Google Drive for backups.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.

Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading or using Marked ("the App"), provided by Yassine Chaabani / ShadowByte Labs ("the Developer"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the App.

2. Use of the App & Data Responsibility

Marked is a local-first journaling and milestone-tracking application. Because your journal is stored on your own devices, and optionally in a folder you choose or in your own Google Drive account, you are responsible for maintaining your own devices and backups.

3. Backup Passwords & Encryption

If you choose to protect your backups with a password, encryption is performed on your device using your password. The Developer never receives, stores or has access to your password or encryption keys. If you forget your backup password, the Developer cannot recover it, and backups made with it cannot be restored without it.

4. Voluntary In-App Purchases (Tips)

All features of Marked are free. The App offers optional in-app purchases ("tips") for users who wish to support ongoing development; a tip only turns off the daily support reminder. All payments are processed securely by Google Play Billing and are subject to Google Play's payment terms and applicable statutory consumer refund rights (including EEA and UK consumer protection laws where applicable).

5. Disclaimer of Warranties & Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the App is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. The Developer shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages, including loss of journal data resulting from device failure, accidental deletion or forgotten backup passwords. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any mandatory consumer rights you may have under the laws of your country of residence.
